Oknotch: Sometimes it’s best for an artiste to wait for the right time and/or study the scene before putting out new music, considering the volume of music out in the mainstream.
In some cases, the music gains appreciation when the right time comes.
Like fine wine, a few of Runtown’s songs are making waves in 2018 although they were released in 2017.
Here are three such songs by the ‘sound god’.
Energy
‘Energy’, released late 2017, didn’t quite catch on. In his defense, the entire fall of 2017 had so many hits mostly from the top five artistes of the year.
Despite the domination of songs by Wizkid, Davido, Olamide and Tiwa Savage, ‘Energy’ managed to hang on, re-emerging in 2018 when the yearn for something fresh returned to the fore.
‘Energy’, a song whose theme is about paying little attention to negative vibes, has a slow tempo which relaxes the listener yet gives them a certain kind of energy that only a Runtown song can present.
Said
‘Said’, a collaboration with South Africa’s Nasty C, is a departure from the slow vibe of ‘Energy’. It is on a much faster tempo, bolting up the listener in preparation for a dance.
The song is an anthem for those who started from the bottom and made it to the top.
‘Said’ begins with a dope rap verse by Nasty C, and Runtown, the hook king, gave it the finishing touch it needed to make it one to remember.
Why
Although owned by DJ Neptune, Runtown is responsible for the vocals on the song.
Runtown is known for his unique sound, melody, and flow; ‘Why’ is a clear representation of that.
Released late December, it barely hit the mainstream, but now, it is slowly blooming.
With its harmonic sounds that make you want to slow wind like one in love, the song is right for the month’s mood, and beyond.
